Mitch was awakened the morning of Thanksgiving by his seven-year-old nephew, Colin, pouncing on him.

“Uncle Mitch! Uncle Mitch! Wake up.” Colin shook Mitch as he was taken from another Hannah-filled dream.

“What’s up, buddy?” Mitch yawned as he sat up in his bed, taking in the room he now called his own. The two-bedroom, two-bath house was a far cry from the brownstone, but it was just what he needed at the moment. Also, the fact that his brother was right next door didn’t hurt.

“You gotta go with Dad so when you come back we can watch the parade together, then we’re gonna play football, then we’re gonna eat turkey until we all have to unbuckle our pants like Grandpa Melvin.” Colin’s face lit up with his rushed explanation of the day’s upcoming events.

“Okay, bud. I’ll get dressed and meet your dad out front in ten minutes.”

Colin rushed out of the room as quick as his little legs could carry him. Mitch laughed it off, but held on to the warmth in his chest. Feelings of guilt and regret trickled through his mind as he got dressed. He would never forgive himself for putting Trina above his true family.
